FOUNTAIN CARE AND MAINTENANCE

The following general guidelines should be followed for every fountain set-up:

- The fountain should be set up on a flat, level surface to ensure proper water flow.
- A properly prepared base of gravel, flagstone, or other hardscaping material is preferred to maintain stability.
- Check that the pump works BEFORE assembly by placing it in a bucket of water and operating the pump.
- A fountain pump should only be connected to a properly grounded 110 volt (AC only) GFCI protected receptacle.

Proper care for all cast stone fountains should include the following important tips:

- Consistent filling is required to maintain a proper water level and ensure that the pump remains totally submerged. If the level of water is too low, the pump will be damaged. Appropriate water level is also required for proper fountain performance.
- Keep pump inflow free of debris to insure proper water flow. Periodic cleaning of the pump will extend its life.
- If desired, the fountain may be cleaned with mild soap and a soft bristle brush. DO NOT use bleach as this may affect the patina.
- Algaecides available at pond supply or garden shops can be used to combat the buildup of algae.
- To maintain the finish, we recommend spraying with a clear acrylic spray rated for outdoor use once a year.

WINTERIZING YOUR FOUNTAIN

Freezing water expands and can cause cracks to form in concrete and other materials.  Before the first frost you should winterize your fountain to protect it.

First, remove all of the water from the fountain shells and any parts of the fountain that will hold water. A wet vacuum or similar vacuum works well for removing the water completely.  If your fountain has drain plugs, remove the drain plugs to drain the water. Collect the drain plugs and place in a plastic bag. Leave the bag in the fountain so you can find them next spring.  The pump can remain in the fountain.

This is a perfect time to clean your fountain.  Remove the drain plugs, let the water drain and remove the leaves and any other debris by hand. Never use harsh cleaners/chemicals or stiff brushes as they will harm the finish. While the shells of the fountain are still damp use a mild soap and a sponge to clean any dirt that may have accumulated during use. Rinse with clean water and wipe the remaining water with a sponge until all the water is removed.

If you have the Massarelli0s EZ fountain lighting system installed in your fountain carefully remove the string of LED lights and the transformer and store indoors for the winter. The jumper wires that are run inside the fountain can be left in the fountain.
