Asian Statuary Care & Maintenance

Proper maintenance is recommended to protect cast stone products from winter freeze-thaw cycles. Pieces that can hold water, snow, or ice--including planters, birdbath and fountain tops, and fountain shells--are susceptible to winter damage. Pieces placed directly on the ground, including statues, birdbath and fountain bases, planters, benches, and tables, may also be damaged by repeated freezing and thawing.

Proper care for cast stone Asian statuary should include the following:
Set the statuary on a flat, level surface to ensure pressure is evenly dispersed.

Clean with mild soap and a soft bristle brush as needed. Do not use bleach, as it may affect the patina.

To help maintain the finish, apply a clear acrylic spray rated for outdoor use once a year.

Always follow these winter care guidelines to help extend the life of your Asian statuary:
If the statuary will remain outside during the winter, raise it off the ground by placing two pressure-treated wood strips underneath it, with one positioned near each end.

Cover the statuary with an appropriate outdoor statuary cover. Do not use a tarp or any other type of plastic, as these materials can trap moisture and cause damage.

Check the cover weekly and after storms or heavy snowfall. Covers can shift and expose the cast stone to damaging moisture.
